"Cheap Chinese dirt bike- please help!!"

OK, I thought my kid needed a Honda 50 (clone) like I had as a kid. Since Honda quit making them I shipped a knockoff over from China. It ran for exactly 6 minutes!!!

The problem is no spark. I ran my test light all over the dam thing. No electricity going into coil. I think I did the test right. Grounded the light and stuck the end into both connections going into coil and kicked it over. Of course I have no manuel for it. Anyone have any advice. My did waited 3 months for this dam thing is obviously more than a little bummed. Thanks in advance.

Don't mean to be a jerk, but Honda still has them:

Around here, PepBoys has a ton of the cheap Chinese knockoffs. Bet they have some spare parts. Maybe they can give you a spare coil to try.

OK, we could all wax eloquent about what a huge mistake you made buying one of these bikes. That doesn't help with your kid's disappointment. My GUESS is that your problem is a short in the generator area. Possibly the flywheel rubbed some insulation off a wire, and is grounding the bike out. Open her up and take a look. However, first make sure you tested the coil properly. One of the leads to the coil is probaly a ground. The other should go to the engine / flywheel area. This is the hot lead. Disconnect from the coil, and hold the end of the lead about 1/8" from the engine case, and kick. Do this in a dark room, and you should see a small spark jump the gap. If you have the spark, then the problem is likey the coil itself. If no spark, then look for the worn insulation / short I mentioned before.

Oh . . . and expect this machine to break down regularly and often. Every one of thse machines I've seen has been an absolute turd. You might get a few miles out of it before having to start replacing things on it that you would NEVER have to replace on a Honda or similar, reputable machine. In other words . . . more disappointments are in store for you and your kid. You might want to think about cutting your financial losses BEFORE adding frustration and aggravation to the mix.

My .02

I wouldn't think a test light would show anything on the coil's input line, because the voltage is too low. Try a voltmeter there instead.

(or am I ignorant here?)
