I owned a Suzuki savage... I loved that bike.. then my ex when we broke up he STOLE it... then I bought my Yamaha RD350 which I love even more than the suzuki.. the seat on the savage is really low set up more like a harley style.. I do not know how it would do as a cafe racer..

Sorry to hear about your ex-wife and all. Women are jealous thievs. I think I might buy a Suzuki Savage. I like the Idea of a modern day, air cooled single cylinder. Like a giant lawnmower engine.

Woops, whilst re-reading my own post like a jack-off. I realized that you are of the feminine persuasion. I appologize for calling women jealous thieves. I didn’t mean all women, only the ones that I seem to meet. Maybee it would help if I wasn't such an A** hole. Thanks for the information about the bike.

   hahahahaha
Believe me when I realized I was not getting my motorcycle back I called up Handy Industries and had them fax a copy of the invoice and credit card receipt for the Hydrolic MC lift we had purchased...
I had to call the cops to make him unlock the garage that both rented together.. and went in showed them my paperwork for the lift.. they then instructed him to unlock his motorcycle from the lift and I took it away.. it might not have cost as much as the motorcycle... but it sure as hell made him have to put the cash out for another one... and also not have the lift and miss out on some work he was doing that required the lift! So we are a little bit of the things you said...

haha ... don't really see how ... its about the exact opposite of a cafe racer ... its a cruiser ... very low seat height - high bars - forward pegs

cruiser > kinda of a 'civilised chopper'

OK if thats what you want ... but its no cafe racer ... and about the worst place to start - to make one.

Not realy... the engine itself makes a great Cafe platform. Big super single. And certainly the frame can be done. I have seen one somewhere. Looked stunning... I will see if I can find it...

Want a engine? One on eBay right now.

I have a Savage. Great single. Great bike.

it may be an OK bike for you ... but its the exact opposite of a 'cafe racer'.

super low seat ... super high bars ... raked out fork ... "hog wheel" on the back.

all your weight is on your ass

Its whole purpose is to have a certain 'look' (a 'custom' - 'cruiser' - 'wannabe chopper' look) .. and to be cheap.

that big upright cylinder WOULD probably look pretty 'retro British' though ...

Seems like 'cafe racer' ... would require everything -but the motor- to be changed ...

I know a guy who's got a motor too ... he was gonna do some radical custom ... then never did it.

Well I agree that most Cafe racers had that high level seat set up... but thats mainly what they had at the time to make them. That was the predominant frame style of the time. It was even done with Harleys... with somewhat lower seats... but still not as rad as todays Crusers are... I grant ya that. But none the less I can envison a Cafe Style crusier in my mind. Nothing that I know of is set in stone about "cafe racers". However there is enough there to work with on a Savage... it being a single banger and all that. Can be an interesting version of one. This guy that did one... pulled it off pretty well. Course with some give and take. He of course had to do that... but still had that look he achieved anyway. The rake is not too extreme in them so you can do some bar changes. Your basic issue is the seat area. It can be done with a custom seat and seat risers... and some bobbing back there.

If I was going to use a Savage motor - I'd probably just go to a junkyard and get a complete (old ) FZ600 roller from about 1986.

plug in the motor (providing the height fits) ... and there you go - instant lightweight cafe thumper.

.. and awesome handler

Yep.... would be easiest I suppose..

OK I still not found that picture. I think the guy was in Europe somewhere. But I will find it eventualy...

In the mean time... here is one were the owner sort of was approching some of the look. Not entirely but you can see some hints of it.

Hey Phillip....I am going to go out on a limb here and say that the owner was going for a shitbox chopper look

It does remind me of a Triumph bobber a little bit..........

I didn't think I would see it, but that IS a cafe Savage. It seems like you would have to be a midget or a jockey to ride it though. If I were 4'9" I would definitely be into a bike like that. And from the sound those things make stock I would think there would be a fair bit of power to be gained by opening things up. It's well executed but I don't think I could cope with the 11" seat height.

Thats it!!!! Well very similar to the one I saw.

And for you nay sayers... that seat hight is same as the stock. He pulled it off. Its 27 inches I think it is.

At 650cc and about 30 HP stock its got lost of room to get more out of it. Can be mighty close to 40HP from some tuners I have talked to.

I would be curious as to how the steering head angle , rake & trail, etc. translates into a useable little sport single.
Given that the savage is a cruiser to begin with.

Is it a slow steering bike? Neutral handling?
interesting.........

For a Cruiser its handling is very sports bikeish. Mainly due to its narrow profile and weight distribution. It's a 350 pound and narrow bike. A good 100-150 pounds lighter than all the other 650cc (those being Side by side or V twin) Cruisers in that same Motor class. Handles very very well compared to any other cruiser I have riden. Thats mainly why I bought one. Its pretty darn good in the twisties. Not slugish and cruiser like at all. It is NOT a highway cruiser at all. Its more of a two lane backroad around town Cruiser. Its brutal on long trips really. Good for a couple hours. Its the only Cruiser in the entire Metric line up that is anywhere near that light and features a big single thumper.

Very cool, it just seems like such a small bike, compared to my SV650S. Which is a fairly tall bike, very narrow and light.

The steering head angle is visibly raked and the ass end is pretty low so I figured it would be kind of slow handling.
If it makes you feel any better my SV gets a little tiresome in the saddle after a couple of hours as well.

It would take very little to 'adjust' the stance a little further. Grab yourself a pair longer shocks for a bigger bike. Something like these http://omarsdtr.com/cafe14.html should do the trick with a little adaptation.
Would raise te tail a good bit, still allow for a decent ride and would also serve to quicken the steering up.

Yeah man, I'm diggin' the cafe cruiser idea. I had a Savage once upon a time, so far my favorite bike yet. Also the slowest, but somehow made up for its performance in the fun factor. I'll get you some pictures of it later. I've had a CB900F SS in the past, and am currently on the CB750 cafe bandwagon. I'm building a 78 CB750K now that should give even ol' Carpy a run for his money. S'gonna be trick. But in the end, the big fat single savage will still be the coolest bike. I may have to hunt down another one and jump on your bandwagon! I say what's cool is cool, regardless of how "genuine cafe" it is.
