"Baja Trany"

I just got a '04 Baja Chetak and have trouble getting it back into first from either neutral or second when I have pulled up to a stop. Any feedback on that. Other than that I am completely loving it!!!

As much as possible, downshift to 1st while coming to a stop. If you do forget (and I forget frequently), it can be hard. It's a lot easier if you roll the scooter back and forth as you try to shift into 1st. But it's scary when the light changes and that's when you realize you're having a problem, isn't it?

The rolling back and forth a bit was the one useful tip the dealer gave me as I picked up my '03 Legend.

If you're in neutral, make sure you're not holding in the clutch the entire time - it's a constant mesh transmission, so if the gears have stopped spinning, it can be tough to shift. If you let the clutch go for a few seconds and then pull it in and shift it, that should help. Other than that, I second what the other person above said, that it's a good idea to be in first when you're stopped, in case you need to move.

I've got an '04 Chetak too, and it's great! Tons of fun.

My Stella was doing the same thing. After searching here and on the Stella Yahoo group, I found out about rolling when shifting into first. Also, there is a great shift paper on the Bajaj site from the Scooter Swami. It explains constant mesh transmissions in great detail. After reading through it, I went for a ride and mananged to shift into 1st sucessfully every time.

One thing I do at a stop light. is shift into neutral and then let everything go. I watch the traffic and the intersection lights. When they turn yellow, I roll a bit and shift into 1st, ready to go when my light turns green a few seconds later.

Thanks for all the info. they all seem to help and I am doing MUCH better now. I think that leaving it in Neutral when stopped really works and the only discussion is wether or not you want to leave it in gear for a quick escape.

How does the Bajaj shift in comparison to a P200?
