"Bajaj Chetak 06?"

   Hello all,

Since I really need some wheels, I've decided to buy a scooter, after looking around for a few weeks, I've decided that'll I'll settle for a Bajaj Chetak.

What I'm wondering though is how are the '06's different from the others. I've read here that the '05 has the legend head panel (I've never actually seen a '05 chetak though, pics are hard to find, even on the net), which sadly I find ugly. So I was wondering if the '06 was the same, since the only picture I can find is that one side picture on the BajajUSA website, which I can only make out a slightly different front fender and spare possition). I also was wondering what other major change are and if doing a custom paint will void the warrenty, since the '06 color are kind of bland to me.

And incase I can't grab one for whatever reasons, what other scoots are reccomneded. I already ruled out most of the Auto transmissions, but I'll welcome any really good ones that aren't over 3000 and the Stella is not available in California (Or else I would have jumped on an orange one right away).

Thanks all a nd happy scooting. I hope I can join you guys soon.

first no bajaj scooters came to this country in 05- 04 yes the 06 chetaks have the chetak headset round headlight what they were talking about was the fork the legend front end had more grease fittings a little more beefier thats about it and on the back end it has the legend tailight. I dont understand how you can say you are settling on a bajaj, I have had my bajaj almost 2 years now with 9000 miles and it still starts first kick I do all my maintenance myself , this is a quality machine and bajajusa is a quality company check out the bajajscooter group on yahoo to get more info. custom painting doesnt void the warrenty

The world "on the street" is that Stella will be available in CA for 2006. Also, Genuine (the Stella "manufacturer"/importer) is said to have 3 new models to annouce in February, along with the new CA-legal Stella. Sounds like the new models will include some small-CC automatics and some "clean" two-strokes, etc. Lots of rumors. CA-legal Stella is supposed to have a new catalytic converter to meet CA emmissions. (And some evaporative controls for the fuel tank would seem necessary?) Check out the www.stellaspeed.com archives for info.

The yahoo Bajaj group has pretty good updates on those models, and the importer is active there. Sounds like Bajaj combined the Legand and Chetak lines, keeping the round retro headlight of the Chetak and everything else from the Legand. Not sure about the shifters, etc. That's what the Bajaj website says at least.

So, if you can wait till about February, there is a chance you can order a Stella for CA. Since new Bajajs aren't available yet (they keep saying will be Real Soon Now) not such a hardship to wait a while.

   Thanks for the repleis guys.

If the rumour about the Stella is true, then I'm more than happy to wait. The Bajaj seems like a fine scooter, but I really am more interested in the Stella. though strange that they would be selling autos since they say this in their faq:

-----
-Do all scooter buyers want automatic transmission?

- No way! That's just what all the importers are selling. Would you want a sports car with automatic transmission?

Stella's manual shift allows you total control and really makes her a gas to drive. Anyone who has driven a car with a clutch will easily learn to shift Stella."
-----

I'll probably be looking around for information on the Stella then. The '06 Bajaj's though, acording to the Scooter shop in CA, will be coming in by the end of the month in Silver only.

Thanks again

This is great news! Now we have to see if there are any dealers that will sell them around here (Scooter shoop? Big Ass? Noho?)

I hear that the new Chetaks are arriving right about now and should be available in two or three weeks. (I think I saw someone mention this on the bajaj yahoo board). I have an '03. It's bulletproof as far as I'm concerned. I ride the piss out of her and never any problems at all. Seems to require very little maintenance. I regularly get mine up to 62-65 mph with no mods. I love this bike. Good luck with whatever you end up getting. Just make sure you ride it and have fun!

All I know about the '06 Chetak comes from comparing that one photo on the BajajUSA website with photos of older Chetaks and Legends. The '06 looks JUST like the old Legend, fitted with a Chetak headset and glovebox. Essentially it looks like a combination of the best parts from the two models.
I sure hope it's as good as the folks on this BBS say Bajajes are because I'm on the list to get one of the first '06 shipment from San Francisco Scooter Center. It looks like it may be early January before any of them actually hit the streets, though.

Ooh, I just checked the Yahoo Bajaj group and it looks like the first shipment has a few days left before it lands. If you want one by christmas you better get ready for a dockyard raid. Silver only, too, which means I have to wait for the next shipment.

you made a good choice, when I first got mine there were only 2 in the scooter club I belong to, the rest mainly vintage bikes, now like 8 probably more. but a club with over 100 members its hard to know who has what. all I know is everyone with one loves it some even own vintage scoots but when they go on a long ride the bajaj comes out like said earlier these scoots are bulletproof .

I just ordered mine today from Michael In Orange County, California. I ordered a silver Chetak, and I believe it will be coming in at the end of December.

I can hardly wait. I am anxious to learn how to do the manual shift on this. I have driven manual shifts in cars and trucks all of my life.. so this will be new.

My first scoot was a Honda Metropolitan. A great bike. But I outgrew it, and sold it. I am really sold on the Chetak, after much reading on the net, and these boards. A good solid bike, with a great reputation, and not so hard on the wallet like a Vespa.

I like the idea of it being "bulletproof", like it has been described. It is not as fast as some, but I like the idea of it being a solid ride. Being durable is more important to me than speed. And the Chetak goes plenty fast enough to have a great time.

Can I suggest to anyone who is in Southern California to see Michael at the Scooter Shop in Orange. He has been more than good.. dialoging with me prior today by way of e-mail. And with a downpayment of 500, he will give you a VERY GOOD deal on your scoot.

You all.. have a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year.
I would love to hear any comments from veteran Bajaj Chetak riders to help me get started with this scooter.

Respectfully.. Steve

Do yourself a favor and swap the stock tires for something a little stickier.

The Nylogrip tires they were putting on the Chetaks a couple years ago are death traps.
I know they changed the tread pattern last year, but it's still probably wise to replace w/ Conti's, Michelins, or Sava's. HUGE difference in straightline tracking and cornering stability.
