"Thinking of buying 2001 Derbi Atlantis"

   Hey guys,

I'm completely new to everything that has to do with scooters, i'm an international student in California right now, and it's beocme clear i'll need some mode of transportation, and a scooter seemed like the most easy/economical thing.

So through Craigslist i found this lady who's selling a 2001 Derbi Atlantis, i'd never heard of it before but did a google on it and found every review i read to be stellar, so i was pretty excited about it. I went to see it, and tried it out, it seems to run well and looks pretty nicely, although the mirrors (or the plastic on them) is a bit scratched, along with a few scratches along it (nothing bad though), there's also a crack in the fender over the front feel, but like i said, i don't really care about the look of it if it gets me around. Also it's got around 4400 miles on it, which i figured was pretty good for a bike of that age.

She says it's got a new battery in it, she bought a new sparkplug that she has under the seat but never got around to put in aparently, but it seems to run pretty well (only took it for a quick lap around the block).

Basicly i was hoping for any advice from you guys. The bike seems nice, and from what i can see on reviews. She's putting a price of 1000$ on it, and throwing in a good helmet with it, but i really have no idea if i'm getting screwed or not (i tried to haggle a bit with her to get the price down a few 100$'s but she said it was valued at 1300$ and didn't want to go any further down). I've kinda commited to buying it at 1000$ but nothing is final yet.

As it stands now i'm thinking i'll get it and pay the 1000$, i definately can't afford a new scooter, i was hoping for something around 800$, since that's really all i can afford right now, but i can scrape this together, been watching craigslist for the past 3 weeks and California isn't exactly ripe with people selling scooters.

But yeah, any comments welcome, since i really don't know much what i'm doing here.

I know that buses suck, but would you consider trying to save some money to get up into a larger scoot?

Not sure where you are, but I bought a 50cc scooter (typhoon) for 800 dollars on craigslist, and now I am trying to figure out how to get into something with a little more topend

If you can get everywhere you need to go on streets that are slower than 35 mph, then a 50cc should be fine, but anything where traffic is faster than that seriously consider a 80cc-150cc scoot. That would be an Elite 80, Vino 125, Buddy, etc.

There are alot of factors to consider. This isn't the only scooter in the world, and it sounds like money isn't exactly growing on trees for you. What do you lose by waiting for a bit and taking some time to talk to people around here?

I would LOVE to get into a bigger scooter, but i really don't have the funding for anything over 1000$, like i said i tried to haggle this one down a bit, but was shot down. I'm willing to pay the 1000$ if it's a good deal and a good bike.

You're right that it won't hurt to wait, other then i'll propably lose this deal, and like i said SoCal doesn't seem to have that many people selling used bikes. As far as the roads go, i'm pretty sure 45-55 is the limit on most the roads, and from what i've gathered that's about the top speed of this one. I was originally thinking of buying a moped and staying on the bike paths. Basicly (if you know a bit about SoCal) i'm at UCI campus right now, and need to get to Mission Viejo every day to practice. I'm doing it by bus right now, but have to ride my bike home (since buses stop at 8 here). I've gotten some offers on carpools and have been taking people up on it, but i really hate being dependent on other people like that (although they seem very helpful and don't mind).

a 50cc scoot will get up to 35 mph in a somewhat reasonable fashion. 35-45 is a totally different story. My typhoon will go 45, but it takes a really long time to get there. If I am on an incline, forget it. On a steep incline, I may be able to sqeeze 30 MPH...Mabye.

If you need to spend most of your time at 45 MPH, and everyone is passing you at 50, then you ought to reconsider a 50cc scooter. At 45, you have no passing power, and you are the upper limit of a stock scooters speed.

I have heard good things about Yamaha Zuma in the speed department though.

Anybody want to chime in?

Like i said man, i'd love to get a bigger scooter, but from what i've read the Derbi Atlantis seems to be the most powerful 50cc out there capable of reaching pretty decent speeds, and i just don't have the money for anything over 1000$ That's not me being cheap, i literally have 700$ in my account and have to produce some magic to get that last 300 required for this purchase.

If you guys have suggestions on other buys that would be better for similar money, that would be awesome, but i'm assuming a more powerful Honda would cost a good deal more then this one.

Interestingly enough.... Later model Atlantis came with the same exact engine as Typhoon, but Atlantis is MANY MANY times faster! Piaggio put a restricted pipe, variator ring, fresh air injection system, different CDI system, and possibly restricted gearing on the Typoon.

Atlantis for $1000 is a fine deal.

Actually i have a couple of more questions.

Would the Derbi Atlantis meet the emission requirements set by California? I know the vehicle has been registered in California before, but i believe it's right now listed as not in use (it ran out in 2005 i believe).

And also, i have the motorcycle learners permit, which i aparently need to ride this thing. But will i be able to register the scooter to my name, and get insurance on it, without having the drivers license? Because i'd like to take the driving test on my scooter, but it hsa to be registered and insured in order for them to allow that.

If the scooter has been registered in California before, there should be no problems getting it registered again. A non-op designation is even easier to reactivate since there are no back fees to worry about.

You can register and insure the scooter without a class M endorsement. Frankly, neither the DMV nor the insurance companies care if you even have the permit for paperwork like that.

The Derbi is a great scooter, though they haven't been available in the U.S. for a while. I don't know if the '01 Atlantis uses the same motor that's in the Vespa ET2, but it might. That would be key if you ever need to get parts, because I've heard that Derbi is not supplying parts to the U.S. anymore.

I agree with the other posters that a 50cc machine in general will have trouble keeping up with California traffic. Sucks, doesn't it? In fact in my experience almost nothing short of a 150cc (sometimes 125) has enough pep to avoid getting run over on the major roads. If you're really pressed for cash and don't mind a manual transmission, you may want to look for a used 250cc motorcycle. I'm not saying you'll find something that runs well for a grand, but at least you don't have to pay the "scooter premium" in the price.

Bear in mind that you need to set aside money for any of the following that you don't already have:
$100 -- full-face helmet
$200 -- riding jacket
$30 -- protective gloves
$100/year on up -- insurance
8% sales tax on scooter (collected at DMV)
$50 -- good chain/cable lock
$200 -- MSF safety course (the best way to get a class M license)

It's easy to spend $800 without even buying the scooter yet.

It's mostly the fault of America's hectic and lethal road system. Every year traffic gets faster and faster and denser and denser and more and more deadly for riders of small vehicles. If we could get more places at 25 miles an hour, it would be a 50cc Scootopia. In that world the Derbi is one of the first scooters I'd consider buying.

Yeah those things i will have to buy :/ Although there is a full face helmet included in the price (an approved one bought from the same place as the scooter she told me). I do know the shop it was bought from (www.scootershop.com) is still around, and fairly close to me, and from what i understand they still sell derbi parts, and service their old scooters.

I was thinking about the MSF course, but that was 250$ since i'm over 21, and they didn't have an opening until late december, so i figured i'd just learn on my own, cheaper and faster.

THE LOCK! I definately want a better lock, she threw some lock in there but it basicly looks like a cheap bike lock, i definately want a better one. The streets i'm riding on aren't too bad, it's basicly the same one every time (90% of the way on Alton), i ride there already on my bicycle at night, and it's not too bad with traffic, i think the speedlimit there is 45.

Right now i'm kinda set on buying this, unless i hear that it's a bad price for it (i'm not too hot on a real motorcycle). I realize that it's not the greatest thing and may not keep up with traffic 100%, but i desperately need a better transportation option then my bicycle, my training is really suffering from not having a good way to get there. And i'm honestly not seeing how i'll find a better vehicle for the same money

Not so fast, Kemosabe! On Ebay I saw a 2001 Italiajet for sale in SoCal (Santa Barbara) with less miles for less money.    Actually Santa Barbara is about 2 hours away from what i've gathered, so i couldn't pick it up and the shipment is 300-650$ according to the website Also it's first bid so it'll propably go up from here, but it's moot since i could not afford the 1200+ pricetag as is. Thanks for the tip though! It's appreciated

My '03 GP1 which is kinda similar to the Atlantis will get up to around 50mph on a smooth flat surface. My scooter doesn't have any modifications except for being de-restricted. You say that scooter shop still sells Derbi parts? Thnk you might be able to check if they have any windscreens that will fit my GP1? I've contaced them before but they never respond. If you could that would be great. If not don't stress it, I've already got a back up plan in the works to get a windscreen.

The Atlantis is a great little scoot that can cruise at 40 -45 mph without problems. I'd give it a test drive to verify that. Derbi has been building 2 wheelers since the 30's. My GP1 is a dream, and the engines are similar.

hah just got it, holy crap that is a lot of fun. Been riding my bike for about 3 years now so this was a welcome change of speed. It goes to 50 easily on flat ground, seems to take it about 10 seconds or so to reach it, but it doesn't go much over that, which is fine by me. Just threw some gas on it, but the oil light is kinda coming on and off, but i'm not finding the 75W90 the manual told me to put in anywhere, think i'll have to scout a bikeshop somewhere to help me out.

Only thing that sucks is parking, since i'm at a dorm that has very scarce parking space, and no motorcycle parking at all, i'm parking it on a bikerack that's kinda hidden and just gotta hope noone sees it and gives me a ticket I've seen others do it though so i might try and pull the stupid foreigner bit and act ignorant to these rules.

Anyway thanks for the responses guys, even though id idn't follow all the advice Assuming this thing doesn't break down easily, i'm a happy camper.

The oil light is for the 2 stroke oil, not the gearbox.

Check with any Vespa dealer for the proper gearbox oil. I use a synthetic that they recommended, and it's just fine
