"Undercarriage"

Hi- I have a 1996 Jetta and I was wondering if I needed to get my undercarriage sealed to prevent rusting. I will probably have it for another three years or so. If it's helpful, I just bought the car in California and I have moved to Northern Virginia. I've been told that it just gets slushy here, not a large amount of snow. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

I would do it just for the piece of mind. AMSOIL sells a product called MPHD it's a heavy duty metal protector that works great as a undercoating.
They're galvanized so they shouldn't rust but we know better than that.

Thanks for the info. Another question then...where would I go to get it done, besides the dealer, which would charge an arm and a leg? I know it's expensive to have it done, but I need to do it that way and would rather pay half an arm than what a VW dealer would charge.

I would Not do it. Ati this stage you risk traping moisture or salt under the undercoating. Instead: keep the car clean. when you get to VA check out all the other Jettas of your vintage, I bet almost all of them are still just fine.

I totally misunderstood what you meant by undercoating.
What we-uns do is spray the underside of the vehicle to add to the protection that's already there.
Sorry for the confusion based on symantics...
